KUWAIT, June 12 (Euronews) – A fire broke out in a building in the southern Kuwaiti city of Mangaf on Tuesday, killing about 50 people, authorities confirmed, but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Eid al Ouaihan, director of the forensic department at the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry, detailed that the fire broke out at 6:00 a.m. local time in a residential building in the city’s Ahmadi governorate, adding that firefighters had brought the fire under control, Kuwait state news agency KUNA reported.

Later, Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister Fahd Youssef, who is also the interior and defense minister, said two people had been arrested for alleged responsibility for the incident, adding that nearly 200 people lived in the building affected by the fire.

As a result, he said that what had happened “was a disaster” and blamed the fire on the “ambition and greed” of the owners of the company that owns the building, which was home to dozens of workers, including immigrants, according to Kuwaiti newspaper Al Qabas.

Yousef said authorities would take action to regulate residential buildings to avoid such incidents from happening again, while Kuwait Mayor Saud al-Dabbousi sacked four officials over the fire and awaited the results of the investigation to be concluded.

Kuwaiti Emir Mishal Ahmed Jaber Al-Sabah expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the “unfortunate accident” and called on the authorities to clarify the truth of the incident and hold those responsible accountable so that this situation “will not happen again in the future.”
