Russia is the world’s largest diamond producer, but the most valuable discoveries in recent years have been in Botswana. The South African country is trying to increase its influence in the industry, and last year negotiated a gradual expansion of its share of rock mined by Anglo-American De Beers in a new 10-year agreement.
Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi will be one of the first people to see the new, as-yet-unnamed Lucara diamond in his office before it is unveiled to the world, the government said.
