The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) yesterday held a meeting with the region’s Ministers of Education and decided to continue offering the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Green Engineering, CAPE Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Agricultural Science (Dual Award) and CSEC Industrial Technology – Mechanical Engineering options syllabuses in line with its new generation technology and science syllabuses.
At a press conference held after the meeting, Dr. Wayne Wesley, Registrar and CEO of CXC, announced the following to reporters:
“Given the pressing education and human resource development needs facing the region, the meeting with the Minister of Education demonstrated our shared commitment to finding a ‘critical path forward’ to address this issue.
The Ministers were forthright in their commitment to support the CXC and their desire to establish more direct channels of communication with the CXC. I would therefore like to announce the following agreed positions we reached at the meeting:
1. The Caribbean Examinations Council will continue to offer the syllabuses for CAPE Green Engineering, CAPE Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, CSEC Agricultural Science (Dual Award) and CSEC Industrial Technology (Mechanical Engineering Option).
2. CXC has launched a range of next generation technology and science courses. Some of these courses currently do not meet the expected demand. Governments will work with CXC to drive demand for these new courses to make them cost-viable.
3. Therefore, today’s deliberations with the Minister of Education highlighted the need for collective regional marketing to promote priority subject areas such as Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics (STEAM) education and climate-smart agriculture, which are critical to economic growth and sustainable development in the region.
4. CXC is committed to ensuring that its communications protocols provide the Minister for Education with wider high-level policy advice to inform decision-making.
In closing, I would like to place on record that the Caribbean Examinations Council is firmly committed to education and human capital development in the region and we will work with all stakeholders to achieve our vision of promoting development in our region.”
