Police in Kuibet District have arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl last month and then fled his village in Mamer-ngap.
The suspect was arrested by security forces on Monday.
Lake State police spokesperson Elijah Mabor Makuac confirmed the arrest to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday.
“The suspect is currently being detained in Cuabet County for investigation,” Makuak said.
Daniel Laat Kon, a civil society activist, said rape and gender-based violence (GBV) are punishable under both government and customary laws, adding that these crimes also include early and forced marriages.
Makuak said the enactment of the law brought hope for protecting girls and reducing gender-based violence in Lake State.
“Yes, cases of gender-based violence still exist and that is why we must appreciate the government’s efforts,” he said, adding that perpetrators would be held accountable.
