Leaving a negative review on Google about a company or service in the UAE can be very costly.
Khaleej Times reports that there have been cases in the UAE recently where citizens have been fined for criticising the services of institutions.
Last year, a woman in Dubai was convicted of defamation for “damaging the reputation” of a hospital after she posted a video clip on Instagram, saying it was the “worst hospital” and that its doctors did not work.
Hatoon faced prosecution under the Cybercrime Act, was fined and ordered to remove the video.
Users need to differentiate between constructive criticism and defamatory comments to avoid fines and penalties.
