Britain’s Molly Cowdery set a world best this year and broke the British record in the women’s pole vault at the World Athletics Continental Tour bronze medal meeting in Toulouse, England on Saturday.
The 24-year-old cleared the world pole vault lead with a clearance of 4.92m at the Capitole Perche stadium in Toulouse, setting the highest result for women in the pole vault so far in 2021 and breaking the British record of 4.90m previously held by Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw.
Cowdrey initially secured the title with a jump of 4.61m, but she kept pushing and continued to compete in the rain. Marie-Julie Bonin of France finished second with a jump of 4.51m.
Cowdrey said she was aiming for her first Olympic medal in Paris after winning the world indoor championships in Glasgow in March, where she currently leads the world with the seventh-best jump in history.
The British athlete won bronze at the European Championships in Rome in early June with a jump of 4.73m. Her previous best was 4.86m in Rouen in February.
