The “Covid-19” virus is still killing about 1,700 people a week worldwide, according to the World Health Organization on Thursday, which called on those most at risk to continue to get vaccinated.
The organization’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned of the danger of declining protection provided by vaccines, telling a news conference: “Despite the continued deaths, data show that the protection provided by vaccines has declined among health workers and children. People over 60 are the worst affected group.”
“The World Health Organization recommends that people most at risk of infection receive a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of their last dose,” the official added.
The World Health Organization reports that the coronavirus has killed more than 7 million people, but the true death toll from the pandemic is believed to be much higher and the virus has devastated economies and paralyzed health systems.
Tedros declared Covid-19 a global health emergency in May 2023; three years after the virus was first detected in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.
The World Health Organization urged governments to continue monitoring and sequencing the virus and to ensure access to reliable and affordable tests, treatments and vaccines.
