The National Assembly yesterday approved the Domestic Violence Bill which contains extensive new provisions, including allowing police to enter homes without a warrant to provide assistance to people who are being threatened.
Once consent is obtained, the Bill will replace the Domestic Violence Act.
The bill, spearheaded by Human Services Minister Vindhya Persaud, aims to address the root causes and increasing frequency of domestic violence, which wreaks havoc on families and causes tragic loss of life.
For nearly three decades, domestic violence law in Guyana has been governed by the Domestic Violence Act 1996. The new Act is a comprehensive update that replaces that Act with a modern framework designed to provide broad protection to individuals within the family. Comprising 58 articles, a schedule and six parts, the Domestic Violence Act addresses previously neglected areas and draws on insights from various research and international models.
