While the commissioner initially said Melendez was fleeing police, records show the San Pedro resident’s injuries were classified as injuries by police on July 7. A video recorded after the incident also showed Melendez walking away in the presence of police. The commissioner’s statement has since sparked criticism, with many saying he intentionally misrepresented the facts. Today, he responded to those comments and weighed in on a new video that allegedly captured Magin asking a bystander to delete the recording on his phone.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams: “As I said before, the BSP is investigating this matter and I managed to read the statements recorded yesterday from the two minors who stopped Mr. Makin and reported to him that they were being chased by these individuals. These statements do need clarification and I have further directed the investigating officers to go back and question these individuals and ask more questions so that we can clarify certain issues. One thing that I read from the statements is that according to the statements of the minors, they initially passed by the location with a female and as they were passing by, one of the individuals who were hanging around probably whistled at the female and the female did not respond to them so after they dropped her off and went back to their respective homes, they had to pass by the same location again and this time as they were passing by, they were chased by these two masked individuals. The thing is, from the statements that I read and what I learned from not being at the premises at the time, the two youths did not go to the police station immediately after the incident and did not go until the following evening. At Makin Sgt. After the incident, the young man went to the police station and filed a report, but the police had not received a report from the two minors at that time, so they did not detain him. They issued him a medical form and sent him to the doctor. While he was filling out the medical form, the minors and their parents came in the evening and gave statements. Now I have some questions about this statement. One of the issues is that the minors could not identify who the people who were chasing them were because they were wearing masks, but if we can clearly understand the type of clothes that the two chasers were wearing and compare it with the clothes that the young man who encountered Mr. Makin was wearing, then we can tell if they are the same person. But it must be noted that the gang that the young man was in and the pursuit were the same gang. As to whether he was one of the participants in the pursuit, I cannot be sure at this time unless we can clarify this matter. But the PSB is investigating this matter. ”
Williams said Melendez remains a fugitive even though his attorney said he is seeking legal action against the police department.
