The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) yesterday expressed deep concern over recent revelations of corruption and financial improprieties within the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and called for an immediate independent investigation into the matter.
According to a press release issued by the GCCI, it is “disgusting” that those entrusted with maintaining law and order in the country are engaging in malfeasance, which raises serious questions about the credibility and objectivity of the GPF. The chamber said that if government personnel responsible for maintaining stability and legitimacy are involved in malfeasance, then they can no longer be trusted to uphold the standards they are supposed to enforce.
The release continued: “The Guyana Police Force must not act with impunity – in fact, members of the force must be held to a higher level of accountability. Failure to act could be seen as condoning corruption, which could lead to lawlessness.”
