BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday (Aug 20) praised the Chinese Olympic delegation for maintaining high standards of “morality, style and integrity” in their quest for gold medals at the Paris Olympics.

Li’s comments come amid renewed attention to doping among Chinese swimmers, after fans used social media to attack and spread rumours about Chinese Olympians and as the government stepped up efforts to tackle fan culture.

At the Great Hall of the People, Xi Jinping spoke highly of the athletes’ achievements as well as their exemplary discipline and conduct.

“On the field, (Chinese Olympic athletes) abided by the rules, respected their opponents, and maintained good competition discipline and civilized etiquette,” Xi said when meeting with the athletes.

The Chinese swimming team has faced increasing scrutiny since news broke in April that 23 swimmers tested positive for banned heart drugs in 2021 but were still allowed to compete in that year’s Tokyo Olympics.

Swimmer Pan Zhanle, who broke the world record in the men’s 100m freestyle, revealed that he underwent 21 doping tests between May and July before the Olympics.
