PARIS: China’s Pan Zhanle enjoyed a “magic moment” as he broke his own world record to win the men’s 100m freestyle at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday (July 31).
This is China’s first swimming gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Pan crossed the finish line in 46.40 seconds, breaking his previous world record of 46.80 seconds set in Doha in February.
Australia’s Kyle Chalmers, the 2016 Rio Olympic gold medalist, took the silver medal by 1.08 seconds, while Romania’s David Popovic took the bronze.
Pan’s victory is a much-needed boost for the Chinese team, which has had disappointing performances so far in the Paris swimming competition.
“I was surprised that I broke the record, it was a magical moment,” said Pan Xiaoling, who missed the final by just 0.06 seconds, having failed to make it past the 200m freestyle preliminaries.
“China is making progress step by step, and breaking this record is a small step in the right direction.”
