China’s Huawei and ZTE have decided to withdraw from Germany’s 5G network.
Germany has decided to exclude Chinese Huawei and ZTE equipment from its 5G networks over the next five years. The two companies have been ordered to remove their equipment from the core network by 2026 and from the access and transport networks by 2026.
The German government said the decision was made to guard against “the risk of sabotage and espionage” and to reduce security risks and foreign dependence. However, Huawei denies any cybersecurity risks associated with its technology.
The decision is expected to further strain relations between Germany and China, its largest trading partner. The United States, Britain, Australia and Japan have also banned Huawei equipment from their 5G networks.
The United States has indeed imposed trade restrictions on Huawei, making it more difficult for it to purchase semiconductor chips from American suppliers.
Europe, the Middle East and Africa account for 21% of Huawei’s revenue.
The decision comes amid deteriorating relations among Germany, the European Union and China, including a trade freeze.
