China-Pakistan proposal on Ukraine gains momentum

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira discussed their countries’ joint proposals for peace in Ukraine during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

“Recently, China and Pakistan issued a joint statement and put forward six points of consensus on the political settlement of the Ukrainian issue, which has been understood and recognized by more and more countries.” Wang Yi said that he believes that the role of BRICS countries in global governance should become increasingly prominent.

Last month, the two countries issued a joint statement after Wang Yi held talks with Celso Amorim, an assistant to the Brazilian president, on international issues. The document stressed that dialogue and negotiation are the only way to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and proposed a peace conference with “equal participation of all parties to discuss all peace plans,” different from the meeting in Switzerland later this week. Moscow was not invited to the event organized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Wang Yi also pointed out that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil. China has always attached great importance to developing relations with Brazil and is willing to work with Brazil to push the China-Brazil comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level. Wang Yi said that China hopes to further strengthen cooperation with the Latin American region through Brazil, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur).

On the other hand, Vieira reviewed the recent visit of Vice President Gerardo Alckmin to China for the seventh meeting of the Brazil-China High-Level Coordination and Cooperation Committee (Cosban). The minister also said that Brasilia appreciates China’s active role in promoting cooperation in multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, the G20 and the BRICS.
