Country singer Carrie Underwood will replace Katy Perry as a judge on American Idol. Underwood was the winner of the fourth season but will judge the 23rd season next year.
Perry shocked fans when she announced she was leaving the show in February.

“I love American Idol so much,” she told Jimmy Kimmel Live! “It connects me to the heart of America, but I feel the need to get out there and find my own rhythm.”
Perry later announced that her new album, 143, would be released in September.
American Idol has been hosted by Ryan Seacrest since its inception, and Perry joined American Idol as a judge alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie after the show moved from Fox to ABC for its 16th season.
Page Six reported at the time that Perry was paid $25 million, more than double what Bryan and Richie made, because she appealed to a “younger audience” and had a “large social media following.” The pay disparity did not cause discord among the judges, who got along well over the seven seasons.
