The inaugural Reggae North Music Awards will be held on September 29 at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ontario. The event features 18 awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Reggae Song of the Year (Male) and Reggae Song of the Year (Female). Canadian artists dominate the recently announced nominations.
Concerned about the lack of recognition for reggae music in Canada, Mark Bennett decided to use his initiative to create an awards ceremony that would do the genre justice. “For many years, the Canadian reggae and dancehall music scene has lacked a prestigious music awards ceremony. We believe that an event of this nature is vital to promoting the many talented singers, musicians, songwriters and producers in Canada. Creating an annual event that brings together all the key players in Canada’s reggae and dancehall music scene will greatly benefit the future of our music,” said Bennett, a singer better known as Tony Anthony.
Bennett said the Caribbean Music and Entertainment Awards, which ran from 2013 to 2019, was the last serious event to honour the achievements of West Indian artists. Juno AwardsIt is Canada’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards, held annually, and features an award for Reggae Album of the Year.
Born in St. Catharines, Bennett has lived in Canada for over 30 years. He currently resides in Toronto and is one of Canada’s most prominent reggae singers, having been nominated for two Reggae Juno Awards.
To ensure fairness and justice in the Reggae North Music Awards, he said nominees are subject to peer review. “Nominees are selected by a dedicated committee of music professionals.” Reggae North Music Awards Tickets “Since sales began on June 11, enthusiasm has grown from Black communities across Canada.
