August 4, and Don. At first glance, Kakanidanda is completely covered with fascinating white stones and looks like Kaligar made of sand and cement. Kakanidanda is made of stones that have natural shapes with various fascinating shapes and is spread over an area of 160 ropani.
A “Rock Garden” is being built at Kakanidanda, a tourist attraction, which is a 30-minute walk up the hill from Halesi, a three-religious site.
The Halesi Tuwachung Municipality has been working to make Kakanidanda an attractive place for domestic and foreign tourists by upgrading Kakanidanda, where local residents have long enjoyed walks and forest meals.
Further decorating the natural stones, planting suitable flowers between the stones, making stone gates (entrances) at some places, making stone streams, carving stones to make statues depicting Mahadev being chased by Bhasmasur, mixing black, white and red stones instead of using natural stones are efforts being made to make flower shapes and ornaments reflecting different arts and cultures.
The rock garden under construction at Kakanidanda in Tuwachung-7 Mahadevasthan, Halesi has been named ‘Bungalung’ by the municipality.
The city’s municipality is building a small stone gate to allow for photographs of mountains including Mount Everest, the world’s tallest peak, and is constructing a small stone gate and developing it into a rock garden.
Likewise, an artistic stone staircase is planned to be built to reach from one area to another, and wooden stations will be set up on the hill for tourists to rest. Apart from this, buildings such as electricity, drinking water system, rest area, cable car, restaurant, etc. are expected to be constructed in the rock garden.
There is a legend that when the demon Bhasmasura was chasing Mahadev, Mahadev’s feet fell on Kakanidanda and the stone art figures appeared. Kakanidanda, which is under construction, is an option for domestic and foreign tourists and is located at the entry point of the government’s 100 tourist destinations, Mundum Trail, which passes through Halesi.
The Mundum trail associated with the Kirati civilization has been identified, starting from Halesi, passing through Rupakot, Temke, Mayung to Salpa Silichung. Tuwachung-Zayjum is considered to be the birthplace of Kirati civilization, located near Halesi and Kakanidanda, and is a confluence of Hinduism, Buddhism and Kirati religions.
The rock garden that has been started in Kakanidanda, a stone scenic spot at the entrance of Mundum Trail, one of the 100 destinations identified by the government, has received attention. The local residents are also happy after the construction of a long-unused modern rock garden began at the initiative of the Kakanidanda Municipality.
Kamal Giri, spokesperson and district chief of Mahadevasthan Municipality, said that after the construction of Kakanidanda Rock Garden started, the surrounding land was bought and sold. He said that the rock garden under construction has become another destination for tourists from Halsi. No tickets are required to visit and tour the rock garden. There are plans to charge an entry fee after the construction is completed. We expect this to help increase the municipality’s internal revenue.
A guard house, restaurant, main entrance, toilets, ticket counter are built in the rock garden, which is constructed using iron rods and wires.
From the rock garden under construction, one can observe various glaciers including the highest peak, Mount Everest, the neighbouring districts of Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Bhojpur and Ramechhap and various parts of the Terai.
Rock Garden has started to develop into a place where some people shoot music videos. Rock Garden near Halesi can be reached from Kathmandu via Madhyapahari Lokmarg, Sindhuli-Khurkot-Ghurmi-Jayaramghat. It can also be reached from Terai district via Mirchaiya-Katari-Ghurmi-Jayaramghat and Dharan-Dhankuta-Bhojpur-Chakhevabhanjang-Diktel in Udaipur, while Rock Garden is a 20-25 minute walk away and a 10 minute drive to Jayaramghat-Halesi Road under Madhyapahari Expressway.
The detailed project report mentioned that a rock garden would be built using natural rock formations covering an area of 56 acres.
Deputy Mayor Ramesh Raut said that the DPR is ready to complete the rock garden which will cost over Rs 5 crore. Around Rs 3 crore has been spent on the construction of the rock garden so far. As it is still under construction, we have accelerated the construction as it has become an option for tourists. After the road grading work is completed, it will be easy to travel.
With joint investment from the three levels of government, work on the upgradation of the rock garden has already started. Mayor Vimala Rai said a plan has been drawn up to boost tourism by upgrading all tourist spots in the city.
“We have more than a dozen religious and tourist sites in the city, including Halesi, a world-famous holy site of three religions, and Tuwachung-Zayjum, the birthplace of the Kirat community. We are upgrading and promoting all these religious and tourist sites,” she said.
She said the municipal government is developing QR codes for religious and tourist sites, which will include introductions, importance, characteristics, distances, etc. He said this move is expected to help foreign tourists understand and visit religious tourist sites here.
Tourism professionals in the area are excited after state and federal governments invested in tourism promotion efforts initiated by the city.
