According to the position of DPS President Delyan Peevski, speculation about a referendum “for” or “against” the euro is a trap, because it means a referendum “for” or “against” our membership in the European Union. The party will not allow this, he noted.

“For 16 years, Bulgaria has been pursuing a consistent policy of joining the Eurozone and adopting the single European currency, the Euro.

The Democratic Party firmly supports this position and I declare that we oppose the attempts of anti-European and pro-Russian parties to play with the “Euro referendum”. As a member of the European Union, we have already made a decision. We have committed to introduce a single European currency by signing the accession treaty. In this sense, a referendum “for” or “against” the euro would mean a referendum “for” or “against” our membership in the European Union.

DPS has been the foundation of this policy all these years and will remain so until this goal is achieved.

We have explained on many occasions the benefits of adopting the euro for people and businesses and that, since our country has had a currency board in place since 1997, the transition will be smooth and problem-free.

Therefore, businesses and people can only benefit from the introduction of a single European currency.”
