The Broward County Commission has confirmed County Executive’s appointment of Joseph Morris as Broward County Port Director port everglades department.
Morris currently serves as Port Director for the Massachusetts Port Authority, where he has worked for four years, initially as Deputy Director of Port Operations. He is expected to begin his tenure at Port Everglades on July 15, 2024.
“As one of Broward County’s major economic engines, it is imperative that we continue to have a strong leader at the helm of Port Everglades. Joe was selected after a comprehensive national search that included input from a variety of port stakeholders. Joe is a visionary with extensive international experience and understands the important role that seaports play in our communities,” said Broward County Executive Monica Cepero.
“Joe has proven himself to be an outstanding leader throughout his career in the private sector and in public service in the port industry, with more than 25 years of extensive experience in seaports, transportation, government and corporate management.”
Good track record
At Port Everglades, Joseph Morris will oversee the seaport’s extensive maritime operations, which generate more than $26.5 billion in economic activity statewide, support nearly 11,000 direct local jobs, and generate more than $925 million in state and local tax revenues each year.

“Everglades County and the Port have a strong reputation for fostering an inclusive economic environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. I look forward to working with staff and community partners to elevate the Port’s standing locally, regionally, and globally,” Morris said.
While at the Massachusetts Port Authority, Morris was responsible for managing cargo and cruise ship operations, multiple properties, five public parks, and public access properties.
He oversaw business development, including the first new Boston-based shipping line in more than seven years, and developed capital investment plans. Morris also managed the Massachusetts Port Authority’s 51-person staff and was responsible for port facility security at the terminals (cruise, container) as well as the public realm (parks and South Boston area).

Morris has worked with governments in several countries including Costa Rica, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Kingdom, and led the team responsible for planning the vessel, rail, gate and yard operations at APM Terminals Los Angeles, the largest container terminal in the United States.
Morris holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix.
