SAO PAULO: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday (June 26) that he believes Argentine President Javier Milley should apologize to him and the Brazilian people because he said “a lot of stupid things” about Brazil.

The Brazilian leftist leader said in an interview with the UOL news agency that he has not yet met with Millet, a right-wing liberal who took office in December, because he wants an apology first.

Millet, an ally of Brazil’s far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, repeatedly attacked Lula during his successful presidential campaign last year, calling him an “angry communist” and a “corrupt element.”

“I just want him to apologize,” Lula said. “Argentina is a country I like very much. Argentina is very important for Brazil and Brazil is very important for Argentina.”

This month, Brazil asked Argentina for information about dozens of Bolsonaro supporters who sought refuge in the neighboring country to avoid legal consequences for last year’s attack on the capital, Brasilia, which was allegedly a coup attempt.

Milley said during his campaign that he was reluctant to do business with Brazil, Argentina’s largest trading partner and Latin America’s largest economy.

Asked about Lula’s comments, Milley’s spokesman Manuel Adoni told a news conference that the Argentine government respected the Brazilian leader but that Milley had not done anything he would regret, “at least not yet.”

Adoni added that Milley had a “chance encounter” with Lula at the G7 summit in Italy earlier this month and had “warmly welcomed” Lula, but noted that the two sides did not hold bilateral talks.
