New York: France’s Clara Breuer fought back from being beaten in the first set to beat 2017 champion Sloane Stephens 0-6 7-5 7-5 in the first round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.
Brear looked a little flustered under the New York spotlight, but after she settled down and ironed out some clumsy errors early on, she prevailed over her more experienced opponent and advanced to the second round to face Victoria Azrenka.
“I was a little nervous at first, and Sloane fought really well,” Birrell said. “I just kept fighting and found a way.”
Stephens was so aggressive from the start, relying on her forehand and making so few mistakes, that Breer could only shake his head in disbelief when the American wrapped up the first set after just 21 minutes.
Stevens led 0-3 in the second set and looked like she was going to win easily, but when her form began to slip, Breer suddenly fought back, attacking Stevens’ vulnerable backhand.
The Frenchwoman ended the second set by breaking her opponent’s serve to zero, which forced Stephens to leave the court briefly before the start of the third set.
The third set was tense and exciting, with the two players breaking each other’s serve three times before Breer finally broke at the baseline to end the match.
