A total of 121 people, mostly women, were killed and 31 injured in a stampede at the Sassan church of preacher Baba Bor in Hathras on Tuesday. After the stampede, 21 bodies were taken to Agra, 28 to Etah, 34 to Hathras and 38 to Aligarh

The bodies of all victims of the Hathras stampede have been identified and handed over to their families, District Collector Ashish Kumar said here on Thursday.

A total of 121 people, mostly women, were killed and 31 injured in a stampede during the satsang of preacher Baba Bhole in Hathras on Tuesday.

According to officials, 21 bodies were sent to Agra, 28 to Itar, 34 to Hathras and 38 to Aligarh after the stampede.

“All the bodies have been identified and handed over (to their respective families),” Kumar told PTI on Thursday.

He said three bodies remained unidentified as of Wednesday, two of which were identified late at night and one through a video call Thursday morning.

“The last body has been identified by the family through a video call. They are on their way to Aligarh Hospital (to collect the body),” the district collector added.

Kumar, an officer of the Indian Army’s special forces who joined the force as commander of Hatras Special Forces a week before the stampede in 2015, said no reports of missing persons had been received so far.

“We have sent district administration staff to count the number of people attending the event (satsang) and those returning,” he said.

“The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured,” the official said.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday set up a three-member judicial committee, headed by a retired high court judge, to probe the Hathras tragedy and investigate whether there was a “conspiracy” behind the stampede. The committee will submit its report within two months.

Police have registered a case against the organisers of a ‘satsang’ near Pukhari village in Hathras, accusing them of cramming 2.5 lakh people into the venue despite having obtained a permit to accommodate only 80,000 people.

The FIR filed at Sikandra Rau police station late on Tuesday named “Mukhya sevadar” Devprakash Madhukar and other organisers as accused. The preacher, Jagat Guru Saakar Vishwahari Bhole Baba, was not on the list.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who visited Hathras on Wednesday and visited the injured, was asked why the preacher was not named as an accused in the FIR.

“On the face of it, the case has been filed against those who applied to host the event. Anyone responsible will be scrutinized,” he said.
