Former President Abdulla Yameen has said the Bank of Maldives (BML) should not be destroyed by the government.

Yameen’s comments came as police launched an investigation into BML’s decision not to withdraw dollars from its rupee cards on Sunday, saying there were reasons to believe that attempts were being made to change the government.

Yameen told a meeting at the PNF headquarters yesterday that the police statement showed the agency was investigating BML for violating government policies.

“This is something we should avoid at all costs. The government should not do anything that will destroy the State Bank of Sri Lanka,” he said.

Yamin said the cheques were circulated through banks but were not investigated as it could lead to people losing confidence in them.

“This is the most serious crime the criminal investigation department is investigating,” he said.

Yameen also said that the finance minister had failed to perform his duties. He said the minister should have explained the situation of BML through the people who represented the finance ministry on the bank’s board. He also said that BML was regulated by the finance ministry and the finance minister was one of the ministers who stood up against the bank.
