The report states that by 2022, 1.8 billion people – nearly a third of the world’s adults – will not be getting enough physical activity.
The report noted that inactivity rates among adults increased by 5% between 2010 and 2022, and noted that if the growth trend continues, the inactivity rate will increase to 35% by 2030.
The report highlights that lack of exercise can lead to diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia and cancer in adults.
Women are less active
The report noted that the global inactivity rate for women is 34%, compared to 29% for men, with the difference reaching 20% in some countries.
The report noted that people over 60 are more physically inactive than other adults and highlighted the importance of physical activity for older people.
The report noted that the Asia-Pacific region had the highest rate of physical inactivity at 48%, followed by South Asia at 45%.
The level of inactivity in Western countries was 28%, while in Oceania it was 14%, according to the report, which also included an assessment by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Ghebreyesus therefore called for action to halt the increase in inactivity levels.
The organization recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week.
