Kosovo Justice Minister Albrena Haksius on Saturday called for the launch of local and international investigations into, as she said, incitement and organization of the escape of prisoners from Kosovo prisons to Serbian territory.

She said the Serbian government was organizing the arrival of prisoners, detainees and persons wanted by Kosovo justice in exchange for a “protective environment for the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo from impunity and criminal prosecution.”
“This support is absolutely deliberate and organized and is aimed at undermining public order, the constitution and the legal order of the Republic of Kosovo,” Haksius said, without providing any evidence for those claims.
The post was published on the Facebook social network a day after Faton Hajrizi, a fugitive from Kosovo’s Smrekonica prison, was reportedly killed by Serbian authorities.
Hajirizi had been wanted by Serbian authorities following reports that he had killed a Serbian police officer and wounded another during a routine check in Loznica, Serbia, a town near Bosnia and Herzegovina, on July 18.
Serbian authorities are treating the attack as a terrorist act and have launched a massive search operation.
In addition to Hajrizi, who has a history of escaping from Kosovo prisons, another prisoner, Ujkan Metaj, also escaped from Kosovo in recent days.
Minister Haksiu said it was not yet clear whether Hajirizi was killed or whether the act took place in Serbia or Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“An extensive and in-depth investigation is definitely needed to clarify the truth of this case,” she said.
Haksius also condemned the Serbian government’s use of racial profiling in the murder of a Serbian police officer.
“This statement by the Belgrade government serves as a warning against future events concocted in Belgrade with a clear chauvinistic and ethno-political perspective”.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti also called for the case not to be politicized. /REL
