The minister faced insults from the public and MPs.
The Law Society of Namibia (LSN) has condemned the trend of sensational negative comments about homosexuality and same-sex marriage directed at Justice Minister Yvonne Dausabu.
In late June, the High Court ruled that homosexual acts were illegal, a ruling that many politicians, activists and priests publicly criticized. Some anti-gay activists even threatened to boycott the presidential election in November until the ruling was overturned.
Citizens have expressed outrage at the decision. One commenter said: “The ruling government must be voted out for this nonsense… We have been watching this agenda being pushed by the Attorney General. I personally believe she was appointed for this evil agenda. We want a government that will lead us morally, not a government of the West African People’s Party liberals and anti-God.”
On Facebook, another person wrote: “We are a Christian nation and we need to move away from the Sodom and Gomorrah concept of monogamy. Even animals don’t do that.”
Man or woman?
Amid rumors that she had travelled to South Africa a year ago to marry her boyfriend, also a woman, the now-deregistered Namibian Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) party chairman Epaflas Mukwilongo publicly attacked Minister Dausabu in parliament, questioning whether she was a man or a woman.
Last year, Dusab faced allegations that she was a relative of Friedel Dusab and perhaps an instigator of silence. Dusab challenged the legality of the sodomy law in the High Court, which ruled in favor of Friedel Dusab last month.
“Such statements undermine the principles of fairness, justice and respect for all,” LSN said in a statement. The group urged the public to engage in respectful, informed and helpful discussions.
The Bar further cautioned the media and individuals to exercise restraint and responsibility in their comments and reporting, ensure that they maintain high integrity and avoid unnecessary personal attacks.
