Making coconut oil is a traditional activity in St. Lucia and participating in the process helps children learn about their traditions. Bansela Grandes RC Comprehensive School is the venue for such activities during its summer camp. The event was organized by Makeba Anthony, Youth Officer of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports.
Youth leader Zadee Chicot got the opportunity to speak about the camp.
“The students hiked in the forest to find coconuts and when they came back they went through the process where they opened the coconuts, ground the pulp and extracted the coconut oil.
The idea behind the coconut oil making process is to allow students to experience the daily lives of the elderly in the community,” she said.
Pupils aged between 4 and 12 and team leaders aged 13 to 18 took part in vegetable growing, various sports activities, ring games, arts and crafts and team-building projects.
Chicot took the opportunity to call on students of her age to hold such summer camps and encourage younger children to come out and play during the summer vacation.
