Bangladesh declares curfew following student protests.

The students were protesting against the decision to give 30% of government jobs to the families of soldiers who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence.

Naimul Islam Khan, spokesman for Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, told AFP the government had declared a nationwide curfew and deployed the army to maintain road safety.

Police are using force to stop protesters and the government cut mobile internet services yesterday to disrupt demonstrations.

The government’s measures have fueled protests, with protesters entering prisons today, releasing hundreds of prisoners and setting them on fire. Clashes between protesters and police have left at least 105 people dead. According to AFP, 52 of them died today.

Police also used rubber bullets and tear gas to stop protesters.

The protests escalated after clashes between pro-government groups and students.
