Balancing Choices: Both Democrats and Republicans Like to Waltz

[ad_1]

A day after Kamala Harris publicly announced her choice for future vice president, America’s eyes are once again on Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz. Reuters noted that he has been in the spotlight before, most notably for his handling of racial justice protests after the killing of George Floyd in 2020.

Walz has been criticized and praised for the way his state handled one of the most turbulent periods in race relations in U.S. history.

Waltz, the running mate of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, has been criticized for his actions following the killing of Floyd, a Black man, by a white Minneapolis police officer, by Republican candidate Donald Trump and far-right commentators who say the Minnesota governor was too slow to mobilize law enforcement to curb looting, arson and violence at protests in Minneapolis.

However, his supporters claim he played an important role in prosecuting the police officers involved in Floyd’s murder, according to Reuters. Waltz and his team said they had done their best to deal with the issue, including deploying the National Guard.

Protests engulfed the Minneapolis area, causing severe damage to buildings, businesses and police stations, and the governor of Minnesota acknowledged the decision to delay the deployment of the National Guard at a press conference a few days later, calling the city’s operation a “complete failure.”

Walz’s actions, however, were praised by some of the nation’s most prominent human rights activists, who said his decision to order the Minnesota attorney general to prosecute the case helped convict Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted of Floyd’s murder.

Experts say it will be difficult for Republicans to unseat Waltz because he has support from both sides of the aisle. Strategists believe Harris struck the right balance in choosing the Minnesota governor as her running mate, given that Waltz is a former teacher and gun owner, winning him support among centrist Americans and voters outside of big cities. / BTA
