A 10-year-old schoolgirl who was found dead with her throat slit has been described as “well-loved” fifth grader Sophie Wang.

The girl was found dead at a house on Australia’s Gold Coast by a male relative, according to local reports.

Queensland police say a 46-year-old woman has been charged with murder after she slit a girl’s throat.

Police said the girl knew her killer.

Police launched a homicide investigation after they found her at a home in Emerald Lakes, Kalala, just after 6pm.

Dan Brown, headmaster of Emmanuel College, wrote a letter to parents paying tribute to the “much-loved” pupil.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that a tragedy occurred at an Emerald Lake residence last night resulting in the death of one of our beloved students,” he wrote.

“We are deeply shocked by this incident and we know it will have a profound impact on our school community.

“Our prayers go out to the child’s family and friends, and our deepest condolences go out to all those affected by this tragedy.”

Queensland Police Inspector Lou Serafim said police were called at 6pm and were told the girl lived at the house where the body was found.

She said: “Police received a triple zero emergency call at about 6pm this evening reporting a 10-year-old girl had died in a unit.”

“At this time, we are treating the death of the 10-year-old girl as suspicious and an investigation into the girl’s death is ongoing.

“When they found the 10-year-old girl, a relative who was at the scene called the 300 police number.”

She called the scene “pretty traumatic”.

Neighbour Chris Sydes told Australian Nine News he felt “heartbroken” when he saw police coming to the street.

“This is a truly horrific, horrific incident, just heartbreakingly horrific,” he said.

Photos circulated on social media showed several police cars and an ambulance with their lights flashing on the street.

According to The Courier-Mail, a tent was set up next to the ambulance at around 8 p.m.

According to Queensland newspapers, forensic team members wearing blue suits were seen entering the property.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, was shocked.

She told local media: “It’s usually very quiet here.

“I can’t believe it.”

Emerald Lake is approximately 15 minutes’ drive from the popular Surfers Paradise.

It is located next to the Carrara Stadium, which once hosted athletics competitions. 2018 Commonwealth Gamesabout an hour’s drive south of Brisbane.
