The character of Moana was voiced by 23-year-old Auli’i Cravalho in the 2016 animated film. Upcoming sequelThe film will be released on November 27 and is separate from the live-action movie.
New Zealander John Tui will play Moana’s “no-nonsense” father Chief Tui, Samoan-New Zealand actress Frankie Adams will play Moana’s “sassy and strong” mother Sina, and Rena Owen, from New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, will play “respected” Grandma Tara.
It has previously been confirmed that Dwayne Johnson, 52, who voiced the eccentric demigod Maui in the 2016 animated film, will reprise the role.
The press release continues: “Moana will bring to life the story of a young woman eager to carve her own path in an all-new way. The production celebrates the islands, communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders in a spectacular adventure, with filming set to begin this summer.”
