Auckland, New Zealand– Hidden away on Auckland’s Sandringham Road is a vibrant blue café that does things a little differently. Blue Rose co-owners Lenny Stevens and Robbie Kainuku have incorporated Maori and Pacific Islander influences into their menus respectively.

Their Koko Samoa Cupcakes were recently listed in Auckland’s 100 Iconic Foods, but they are perhaps best known for their pies, which are handmade and filled with unique ingredients.

About 3,000 of their “palusami” pies, which have corned beef and taro leaves, “cooked” pies, which have bacon bones, watercress and potatoes, and “hangi” pies, which have pork belly, stuffing and sweet potatoes, fly off the counter every week, not counting their catering orders.

The editor of Samoa News discovered Blue Rose Cafe in Auckland after being stuck in New Zealand for two and a half years due to COVID-19 restrictions. Favorites: Palusami pie and Hangi pie!
