Textile artist Tuuli Reinsoo opened the clothing installation “Aino Maria is Home!” at the Ants Laikmaa House Museum in Lena County, inspired by the story of artist Ants Laikmaa and his daughter Aino Maria.
Tuuli Reinsoo’s clothing installation is located on the second floor of Ants Laikmaa House Museum, about 10 km from Haapsalu to Tallinn, and consists of two parts. The jacket placed under the window symbolizes the artist Ants Laikmaad looking towards the railway and waiting for the arrival. The jacket designed for the installation was inspired by a photo of Laikmaa wearing a similar outfit.
However, the skirt behind the jacket depicts Lakma’s daughter, Ino Maria, who was born and lived in Finland and had no contact with her father during Lakma’s lifetime.
“When I read the biography of Aino Maria and the articles written about her, it was clear to me that this dress must contain Aino Maria, the daughter who did not come home, but I brought her home in the form of this dress,” Reinsu said.
In the museum you can see on the screen clips of Finnish feature films in which Aino Maria played the maid. As fate would have it, his film career was limited to supporting roles.
“She plays a supporting role there. She wears more modest clothing and a maid outfit, but she still aspires to be a big movie star, and the dress is inspired by 1930s heroine costumes,” Reinsoo said.
The costume installation at Ants Laikmaa House Museum is open until 29 September.
