KATHMANDU: A bus carrying 43 Indian tourists and crew members plunged into a rain-swollen river in neighbouring Nepal on Friday (August 23), killing more than half of the people on board, a Nepal Armed Police spokesman said.
Spokesman Shailendra Thapa said 27 people were killed and 16 injured in the accident.
The 41 passengers and two crew members on board were all Indians, travelling from the tourist city of Pokhara to the capital Kathmandu.
Roads in mountainous areas can be a challenge for drivers as they are often narrow and dangerous, making it difficult for large vehicles to navigate around sharp bends.
Rescuers rescued 22 people from floodwaters in the Marsyandi river in Tanahun district, about 118 km from Kathmandu, of whom 12 were seriously injured and airlifted to the capital.
At least six people died in hospitals, Thapa said.
