Argentina confirms sixth case of monkeypox
The Argentine government advises citizens to strengthen all preventive measures and announces strengthened border controls
A new case of monkeypox was confirmed in Argentina’s Corrientes province on Friday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to six. The outbreak comes the same week the World Health Organization declared the disease a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in Africa.
The new infection was reported in the National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN) published on Friday by the federal Ministry of Health, which compiles data from the Corrientes provincial public health secretary, Ricardo Cardozo, who also explained that the local patient “has been discharged and is doing well.”
The first confirmed case in Argentina occurred in Buenos Aires Province, followed by two in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), one in Santa Fe and one in Rio Negro. Together with the case in Corrientes Province, there are a total of 6 confirmed cases out of the 39 reported. The infected patients are between 23 and 38 years old, according to the report.
The Corrientes Provincial Epidemiology Department said that the newly emerged virus is not a new variant, but a monkeypox virus that has appeared from time to time since 2022. “The new variant is still in Africa,” the authorities stressed. In 2024, 548 deaths and 15,664 potential cases were reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Monkeypox is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus. Two different evolutionary branches have been identified, I and II.
The main symptoms include a vesicular rash on various parts of the body including the genitals, perianal area, hands and trunk. Fever and myalgias may also occur. So far, there have been no deaths from monkeypox in the country.
However, the national health authorities have announced enhanced preventive measures and tightened border controls in accordance with international regulations. The government also encourages people who have had contact with infected people to go to health centers and avoid contact with others until symptoms subside. It has been proven that infection with monkeypox virus type 1 is transmitted from person to person after contact with people with typical monkeypox lesions or the clothes of infected people.
