St. John’s, Antigua (CMC) – Antigua’s Sports Minister Daryl Matthew believes that Cricket West Indies (CWI) should extend the presidential term limit to four years.
Speaking at the quarterly press conference of the Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI) on Thursday, Matthew said the current two-year term was not long enough for any president to make any significant changes during his term.
Matthew told CWI President Dr Kishore Sharo that while he was impressed with what he had achieved since his election in March 2023, two years was simply not enough time for him to achieve all his goals.
Furthermore, he said the four-year term would bring the CWI in line with similar sports organizations around the world.
In many modern sports, executives serve four-year terms. When your organization has elections every two years, there is little time to do anything other than campaign,” Matthew explained.
“I believe this is not good for the organization. I believe in the work you and your team have done over the last few years to improve the overall governance of CWI and I think now is the time to address this final hurdle.
“I think this is simply not sustainable for an organisation as big as the CWI, which represents people as passionately as it does. An organisation with the resources and huge responsibilities cannot be in election mode all the time,” he added.
However, Matthew said he understood the challenges Dr. Schawlow would face if he sought an extension of term limits while still president.
“I hope that in the near future your board will be able to address this issue and perhaps try to extend the term to four years, as is done in almost every other international sports organisation in the world.
“I can understand that as the current president you would not be comfortable with addressing this issue. There may be people with ill intentions who would see this as a self-serving move, and I don’t know how you and your team would resolve this, but in my opinion, a two-year term is certainly unrealistic and probably unwise for an organisation like the CWI,” Matthew insisted.
