Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Monica Bonnaire participated this week in the SportAccord Congress organized by UNESCO in Paris, taking advantage of the visibility of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be held in the French capital in July (26-11 August) and August 28-8 September, respectively. During this conference, Bonnaire explained Andorra’s commitment to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in terms of “sustainability in the field of sport”.

In this sense, he highlighted the environmental measures taken during the celebration of sporting events such as the Alpine Ski World Cup, including waste management and sustainable water management plans, as well as the training provided to staff and volunteers of these events in environmental management, accessibility and gender equality. “We work in a transversal way, not only to reduce the impact of such events, but also to make them a benchmark for other sports, cultural or leisure events,” said Bonell.

The minister also reported on the measures taken by ski resorts to reduce the ecological footprint of celebrating these major sporting events, as well as their commitment to implementing renewable energy sources for greater energy independence. “Andorra’s bid to host the 2029 World Ski Championships, although it did not win, served as a motivation for Andorran resorts to implement a series of measures”, Bonaire stressed.

As part of this meeting, Monica Bonell met with Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO Deputy Director-General for Human and Social Sciences; Stefania Giannini, Assistant Deputy Director-General for Education; together with Begoña Lasagabaster, UNESCO Director for Gender Equality; and the Ministers of Sport of Chile, Monaco, San Marino, Italy, Gabon, Slovakia, Luxembourg, the United States, Canada, Mozambique, Haiti and Azerbaijan, who chaired the ministerial meeting.
