Being outspoken about human rights issues in Asia
Sean King, senior vice president of New York consulting firm Park Strategies, noted that Harris was “very outspoken” on Asian human rights issues while serving as a California senator.
For example, she co-sponsored the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act with Florida Senator Marco Rubio in 2019.
She has also drafted several pieces of legislation concerning Myanmar, which has been plunged into civil war following a 2021 military coup.
“Regardless of whether any president comes into office with foreign policy experience or not, I feel very confident given her background and the administration she’s leaving,” Kim told CNA938.
“I would have no doubts, and I think a lot of our allies have confidence in her.”
King added that he believes Harris will push for greater U.S. alliances with Asian allies as much as possible.
For example, South Korea now has a pro-American president – Yoon Seok-yeol – who may have three years left in his term. But Kim said the possibility of a scandal in South Korea cannot be ruled out.
He warned Harris not to take things too personally, though he said there was no indication yet that would happen.
King added: “If there’s one thing I least want her to see that the last two presidents have done, that’s it, because I really don’t care how many times Biden has met with (Chinese President) Xi Jinping.”
“The fact that Trump is in love with (North Korean leader) Kim Jong-un disgusts me.”
