Richard Bennett, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, said the Taliban had not yet given specific reasons for banning him from traveling to Afghanistan.
Bennett made the remarks in an interview with the private Amu TV station on Wednesday, citing his reports and statements criticizing the Taliban’s policies and actions that violated human rights as the reason for the Taliban’s decision to ban him from traveling to Afghanistan.
Some media reported late Sunday, citing Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, that Bennett’s trip to Afghanistan was banned because Mujahid said he was “providing false information to the world about the situation in the country.”
Bennett said he has not been to Afghanistan since May and the Taliban government has told his team they will no longer host him. He hopes to be able to travel to Afghanistan soon.
Reacting to the Taliban’s ban on Bennett’s travel, Human Rights Watch’s deputy women’s director Haider Barr wrote on Channel X (formerly Twitter) today that the Taliban’s move posed a critical test of the international community’s willingness to defend the rights of women and girls; a test that he said the international community had failed in many cases over the past three years.
Since beginning his mandate as the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in 2022, Mr. Bennett has visited Afghanistan several times, each time accusing the Taliban government of widespread human rights violations, particularly the rights of women and girls.
