Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan was arrested by Rangers personnel on Tuesday in connection with the 2019 Qadeer Trust corruption case, where he was accused of using his power as prime minister in 2019 to provide legal cover for the ill-gotten gains of a real estate tycoon.
The ousted prime minister was detained at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) where he had sought bail in connection with several cases involving terrorism and money laundering.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah claimed at a press conference after Khan’s arrest that the Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman was arrested in connection with the Qadir Trust corruption case where Rs 6,000 crore was misappropriated.
So, what exactly is the Kadir Trust case?
The former prime minister, along with his wife Bushra Bibi and other PTI leaders, are facing a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigation in connection with a settlement between the PTI government and a real estate tycoon that reportedly cost the state exchequer 190 million pounds.
According to the charges, Khan and the other defendants allegedly adjusted 50 billion rupees (£190 million at the time) sent by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pakistani government as part of a deal with the real estate tycoon.
They were also accused of obtaining undue benefits in the form of land of over 458 kanals in Mouza Bakrala in Sohawa for the establishment of Al Qadir University.
exist Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf The UK government, the National Crime Agency (NCA), has seized assets worth £190 million from a British property tycoon.
The agency said the assets would be handed over to the Pakistani government and that the settlement with the Pakistani real estate tycoon was “only a civil matter and does not constitute a finding of guilt.”
Subsequently, then-Prime Minister Khan obtained cabinet approval on December 3, 2019 to reach a settlement with British crime agencies, but did not disclose the details of the confidential agreement.
It was finally decided to submit the money to the Supreme Court in the name of the tycoon.
Subsequently, the Qadeer Trust was established in Islamabad, weeks after the Imran-led government approved the deal with the real estate tycoon.
PTI leaders Zulfi Bukhari, Babar Awan, Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and her close friend Farah Khan were appointed as members of the trust.
Within two to three months of the cabinet’s approval, the real estate tycoon transferred 458 kanals of land to Bukhari, a close aide of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman, who then transferred the land to the trust.
Later, Bukhari and Awan withdrew from the trust. The trust is now registered in the names of Khan, Bushra Bibi and Farah.
The move comes as NAB officials were investigating the UK Crime Agency for alleged abuse of power in the process of recovering “dirty money”.
As solid evidence emerged in the case, the questioning of Imran, Bushra Bibi, lawyer Shahzad Akbar and a real estate tycoon turned into an investigation.
According to National Accountability Bureau officials, Khan and his wife obtained land worth billions of rupees from the real estate tycoon to build an educational institution, in return for a deal to provide legal cover for the black money the real estate tycoon received from British criminal organizations.
