A local village council in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, has handed down a strange verdict in a minor rape case. The accused has been sentenced to five slaps and a fine of Rs 15,000. The unconventional verdict was announced by a Maulana at a village council meeting. A woman from the victim’s side slapped the accused five times and a video of the incident has gone viral.
The police said they would open a case for investigation after receiving the report. According to a police officer, the victim’s family initially reported the minor missing and accused a neighbor boy of being involved. But the report was later withdrawn. The police are currently investigating the widely circulated video.
Minors missing from home
The incident took place in Agra’s Shahganj area. A minor girl went missing from her home and her family called the police. They accused a local youth of kidnapping her. The police started an investigation and searched for the girl. Later, the girl’s family and community members decided to search for the girl themselves, causing the police to withdraw the report.
Maulana announces verdict in Panchayat
Eventually, the girl was found and a local family convened a village council meeting to discuss the matter. A maulana presided over the meeting and heard statements from the accused and the victim’s family. At the village council meeting, the victim accused the accused of luring her away, drugging her, and then raping her.
The accused was punished
After hearing both the parties, the Maulana announced the verdict. He sentenced the accused to five slaps and a fine of Rs 15,000. A woman from the victim’s family slapped the accused in front of the assembled village council. The incident, including the slapping, was caught on video and went viral online. An assistant commissioner of police (ACP) said legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is lodged.
