The man arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a doctor inside a Kolkata hospital went to sleep after returning to his residence and did his laundry the next morning to destroy evidence, police investigating the case said.
However, police found blood stains on the shoes of the accused, a citizen volunteer who had no connection with the Rajasthan Khar Medical College and Hospital but visited there regularly.
The citizen volunteer was arrested on Saturday after the body of a female postgraduate student was found inside a seminar hall of the hospital on Friday morning after she was allegedly raped and murdered.
The protest by junior doctors, demanding swift punishment of the culprits, continued for the third day, affecting services in government hospitals across West Bengal.
City police chief Vineet Goyal visited the medical facility for the second time in three days on Sunday and held a meeting with angry representatives of junior doctors.
He claimed the investigation was “transparent” and called on people not to spread rumours.
“After committing the crime, the suspect returned to his residence and slept till late Friday morning. After waking up, he washed the clothes he wore during the crime to destroy the evidence. During the search, blood stains were found on his shoes,” said the police officer.
When asked if anyone else was involved in some aspect of the allegations, he said, “So far, there is no evidence to suggest that.” The officer said the police are waiting for the final autopsy report as they want to match it with the findings.
A preliminary autopsy report showed the victim had bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts. She also had injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.
Another police officer said circumstantial evidence also suggested the doctor might have been murdered and then raped.
“We are still speaking to the personnel who were on duty from Thursday night till the next morning. We are also checking the CCTV footage,” the officer said.
Police sources said a team of officers from the Special Investigation Bureau and the Forensic Department collected samples from the seminar hall of the hospital on Sunday.
The officer said police also reconstructed the crime scene, although the arrested suspect was not present.
“One of our senior police officers handed over the autopsy report to the parents of the deceased doctor today. We had a fruitful meeting with the students and we think they are satisfied. As per their request, we have removed an assistant police officer posted here,” the police chief said.
Goyal said the police were not trying to hide anyone and the investigation was transparent.
IPS officers said they will soon launch a toll-free number for people to raise suggestions or complaints.
However, angry junior doctors said they would continue to demonstrate until they were fully “satisfied” and their safety demands were addressed.
A junior doctor said after a meeting with Goyal that the shutdown of all emergency and non-emergency services will continue.
Junior doctors, residents and postgraduate trainees (PGTs) at various public hospitals have also demanded that the medical institutions provide them with security and they have stopped working from Friday evening. “The government must take drastic steps to provide justice to the victim. This incident not only reflects systemic failures at the hospital level, but also points to a wider social problem that requires immediate attention,” he said.
Following the unrest, the state health department on Sunday cancelled the leave of all senior doctors in a bid to resolve the impasse.
Doctors from across the country expressed their support.
The Federation of Indian Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has supported the ongoing strike and called for a nationwide stop to elective services in hospitals on Monday.
FORDA has informed the Indian Ministry of Health of its decision.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to impose the death penalty on those responsible.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police deployed a heavy force to the hospital on Sunday.
“No one will be allowed to enter the hospital without proper identification. We will ensure complete safety of medical staff at the healthcare facility,” the official said.
Another official said the hospital authorities have sacked two contract security guards employed by the emergency department for not performing their duties properly, which somehow led to the crime against the doctor.
