Pago Pago – American Samoa
On the afternoon of May 4, 2024, a man from Aso contacted the Tafuna Police Station to report the vandalism of his door to his neighbour, Mr. Fafeti Talia.
According to the victim’s statement, he, his sister and sister’s husband were visiting the US when the police reached his house and Talia popped in to find out who had cut down the coconut trees on their border.
The victim said that he tried to clarify to Talia that he was not the one who cut the coconuts, but still showed the innocence of the accused and frightened the victim with the coconuts in his hand. When Talia left the victim’s house, he called the police because he was worried about the safety of her and her family.
The police also interviewed the victim’s sister who said that Talia went to the house in search of her brother or the one who cut down the coconuts at the border. The sister said that her brother tried to kill the accused, however, Talia’s childishness came out and she threatened her brother as the agasse was in his hands.
The police then went to the defendant’s house and detained him. According to his statement at the police station, he was upset because the man had cut down the coconuts that had been planted near them for a long time. He confirmed that he went to the victim’s house, damaged the “screen” of the door, and threatened the victim in a big way.
Talia was charged with three counts:
SECTION 1: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE – A Class “C” Misdemeanor punishable by up to fifteen (15) days in jail, or a $300 fine, or both.
Count 2: Assault in the Third Degree – a Class “C” Misdemeanor punishable by not more than fifteen (15) days in jail, or a $300 fine, or both.
Count 3: Third Degree Property Damage – a Class ‘B’ Misdemeanor punishable by up to six (6) months imprisonment, or a $500 fine; or both.
The defendant will be released on $1,000 bail pending sentencing.
