The entrance fee and coastal occupation of Akbük Beach (the beach was handed over to the Muğla Environment Foundation (MUÇEV) Tourism Trade Joint Stock Company for operation in 2020) provoked a reaction from citizens, who gathered at Akbük Beach at the call of the Mentşe Municipality. Last September, the Municipal Council launched the “Pick up a towel” protest to occupy the coast.

The citizens’ actions paid off. A bulletin from the Menteşe Municipality, headed by CHP Gonca Köksal, stated that public beaches had been evacuated.

“There is no fee for entering Akbük public beach, which is open to the public free of charge. In addition to parking fees, vehicles are prohibited from entering between 09:00 and 18:00 on the grounds that it poses a danger to Akbük beach,” the city government said in a notice.

“Cannot ask for fees”

Each team hung a sign on the beach saying “This is a public beach, free of charge.”
