Kathmandu, July 24. The disciplinary committee of the CPN-UML has recommended action against the party’s Karnali state president Gulabjun Shah and central committee member Ain Mahal. After an investigation, including a field study, the committee recommended action against Shah and Mahal.
“When the team appointed by the committee conducted on-site research, talked to victims and others, they seemed unfit for the position,” said a member of the committee. He said that after the investigation report was prepared, it was recommended that the party central committee hold a committee meeting and take action.
“I don’t know what the party central committee will do. But what they are doing is undisciplined,” the member said. Karnali president Shah has been accused of corruption and sexual exploitation.
The commission started investigating President Shah after a complaint was filed by a woman from the party. A three-member committee was formed to investigate Shah under the leadership of commission vice-chairman Netra Prasad Panthi. Hark Bahadur Kunwar (Govind) and Deepak Prasad Devkota were part of the committee.
The commission was also charged with investigating Mahal. Hence, Kunwar from Karnali and Devkota from Far West were retained as members. Devkota, a member of the inquiry commission, has now been appointed as the governor of Bagmati Province.
“From the facts seen in the investigation, Mahar’s crime is greater than Shah’s. This is what we have suggested to the party,” the member said. Mahar has also been accused of sexual exploitation. Earlier, an audio recording of him with a woman was also made public.
After the audio was made public, Mahar was removed from the post of core member, but before the recent 15th Baisak by-election, it was decided to reinstate him.
