FRANKFURT: Border authorities in Germany, host of Euro 2024, detected 1,400 unauthorised entries and issued 173 arrest warrants in the week before the football tournament, German newspaper Bild reported.

The Sunday Times said that the temporary expansion of border controls to host the tournament meant that 900 people were unable to enter the country between June 7 and June 13.

“This shows that our measures are working,” Interior Minister Nancy Feather told the newspaper. “The bottom line is that we want to find and stop violent criminals as early as possible.”

Bild did not say how many unauthorized entries into Germany were detected each week.

Reports say about 22,000 federal police officers are being deployed every day to ensure safety at the games. “This is the largest operation in the history of the federal police,” Feather said.

The expanded controls include Germany’s borders with Denmark, France and the Benelux countries, and travelers from the Schengen area – who normally can move freely around the region – will be checked at airports and ports.

Temporary control measures within the Schengen area are scheduled to last until July 19.
