A surfer’s severed leg washed up on the beach after the attack shark She was rushed to hospital in New South Wales in the hope that stitches could be given.
Kay McKenzie, 23, was allegedly bitten by the great white shark while surfing near Port Macquarie on Tuesday morning. Niman is believed to be three metres long.
McKenzie managed to fend for himself before riding a wave to shore, where he was helped by other swimmers and an off-duty police officer.
New South Wales Police confirmed that despite his leg being torn off, he swam to shore shortly after the attack and was iced by locals.
MacKenzie was taken to hospital where his leg was moved in the hope that surgeons would be able to reattach the severed limb. It was not revealed whether the operation was successful.
After assessing photos of the injuries, NSW biologists believe a three-metre great white shark was involved in the attack and caused serious damage to the surfer’s right leg.
According to The Guardian, MacKenzie is recovering in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
An off-duty police officer who was walking his dog responded quickly and tied a leash around the dog’s leg to stop the bleeding.
The procedure saved his life until paramedics arrived.
A GoFundMe page has also been started to help the surfer with his recovery and medical expenses.
