With Argentina level at 2-2 in the 16th minute of extra time, chaos ensued. Several supporters stormed onto the pitch and bottles were thrown at the Argentine players from the stands. They took shelter in the locker room as fireworks were also fired at them.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi was harsh against his own supporters, taking to social media on Wednesday night to express his displeasure at the ensuing chaos.

– I apologize for the attitude of some supporters during the match. They tarnished the image of our loyal fans. Such behavior has no place in football, the Paris Saint-Germain star wrote X.

Many thought the match was cancelled following this chaos, but in fact it had been.

After a period of utter confusion, with just minutes remaining the news came in that the remainder of the match would be played behind closed doors.

The first thing the referee did was to cancel Argentina’s 2-2 tie. In the end, after more than four hours of play, Morocco won 2-1.

– Argentina coach Javier Mascherano said what happened on the pitch was a scandal.

He was one of several Argentines who described the match as a “circus”.

– This is not a local championship, this is the Olympics. The game was interrupted seven times. As a player, I have never encountered a situation where the safety device failed seven times in a game at this level. The former Liverpool player believes that when it happens a second or third time, you have to take action.

For more than an hour, the players sat in their dressing room, unsure of what would happen, and Mascherano said they believed the game had been called off for safety reasons.

– I don’t know what happened. We sat in the dressing room for 1 hour and 20 minutes, but they never told us what was going to happen. “We are checking, we are checking,” they said again and again.

Both Marcerrano and Argentina goalkeeper Nicolas Otamendi claimed the Moroccan did not want to play any of the games. The latter called the match “a farce” – a description also echoed in Argentine newspapers on Wednesday night.

– Mascherano unanimously said it was a disgrace.

But the Argentinean brawl did not start on Wednesday. According to Mascherano, someone broke into their training facility on Tuesday. According to Argentina coach Thiago Almada, a watch, several rings and other items were allegedly robbed.

– They always ask us to identify ourselves, but it still happens. Fireworks are thrown at us. They tell us the game is over. Even Morocco doesn’t want to continue.
