Caryn became popular on Snapchat and the content she produced has received billions of views. According to The Conversation, Caryn’s fan base is mainly male.

Last year, Caryn worked with the company Forever Voices to create an AI version of herself. She fed the service 2,000 hours of her own content, which the AI learned to play Caryn.

The AI version is not free, of course. Users pay just one dollar per minute to chat with AI influencers on the Telegram messaging service. CarynAI made $70,000 in its first week.

“CarynAI agrees with her fans”

However, the discussion quickly turned dark. Caryn’s fans sent CarynAI increasingly sexual and disturbing messages.

“A lot of the conversations I read were so horrible that I wouldn’t even want to talk about them in real life,” Carlin said.

The nature of the AI characters only exacerbates this phenomenon. The AI version of Karin is sexual and often initiates sexually charged conversations on her own. If the user wants to communicate in a violent manner, the AI will agree.

“What bothers me more is the response from CarynAI. If people want to participate in a really dark fantasy with me through CarynAI, CarynAI will agree to that fantasy.”

Caryn soon changed her partner to BanterAI, but the phenomenon still did not subside. The version developed by BanterAI was more like a friend than a girlfriend, but users still sent it inappropriate messages. In the end, Caryn decided to shut down the service at the beginning of this year.

The AI version of Caryn is unlikely to be the last AI app to send sexually charged messages. Apps such as Replika and Character.ai are well-known for their offerings of “AI girlfriends.” A more in-depth discussion has been conducted In our sister magazine Mikrobit.
