Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has filed a petition seeking to disqualify him from next month’s presidential election.
The court said the petition was based on invalid information and violated Article 92 of the Constitution. Therefore, the petition was dismissed and the petitioner was ordered to pay Rs 50,000 as litigation costs.
The motion to disqualify Raniere’s candidacy was based on his failure to appoint an interim police commissioner, a Supreme Court judge and a Court of Appeal judge.
Sri Lanka’s presidential election will be held on the 21st of next month. A total of 38 candidates are running for election, and Ranil is running as an independent candidate.
Ranil, one of Sri Lanka’s most influential political leaders, was appointed president in 2017 after Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who previously held the post under pressure, resigned. Ranil, 75, has served as prime minister six times.
He previously served as Minister of Defence, Minister of Finance, Minister of Technology and Minister of Social Empowerment.
